ԹϱEngineering Professor Hao Zheng Awarded $599,493 NSF Grant
Hao Zheng, an associate professor in USF's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, has been awarded a $599,493 NSF grant for his innovative research on improving System-on-Chip (SoC) design validation. His work focuses on creating a communication-centric validation framework, leveraging advanced deep sequence modeling to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of these critical systems.
ԹϱEngineering Professor Elevated to IEEE Fellow: Lawrence Dunleavy
Professor Larry Dunleavy (EE) has been honored by the IEEE Board of Directors with elevation to IEEE Fellow, effective January 1, 2025, in recognition of his significant contributions to the commercial development of microwave device models and his leadership in microwave education. This prestigious distinction is awarded to fewer than 0.1% of voting members each year, making it a truly remarkable achievement.
Professor Emeritus Richard Gitlin awarded IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal
The 2025 IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal for exceptional contributions to communications and networking sciences, often considered the “Nobel Prize” for communications technology, has been awarded to Distinguished University Professor Emeritus Richard D. Gitlin, a professor in USF’s Institute for Advanced Discovery & Innovation.

Two Թϱ faculty members named NAI fellows
Two Թϱ faculty members, recognized for their groundbreaking discoveries and innovations in chemical engineering to treat cancer and other challenging diseases and nanomaterials engineering for multifunctional manufacturing applications, are among the 2024 Fellows selected to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Election to NAI Fellows is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.
Levi Thompson Named College of Engineering Dean
The Թϱ announced the appointment of Levi Thompson as the new dean of the College of Engineering. Thompson is a highly accomplished researcher who brings strong leadership and administrative experience, including most recently serving as the College of Engineering dean at the University of Delaware and previously as a faculty member at the University of Michigan.

ԹϱMicrobiome Research Awards Granted to ԹϱFaculty: Daniel Yeh & Jody Harwood
Թϱfaculty Daniel Yeh and Jody Harwood have been awarded the 2024-2025 ԹϱMicrobiome Research Award for developing sustainable wastewater systems for lunar habitats. Their innovative project combines environmental engineering and microbiology to tackle waste treatment in space, with potential applications for Earth.

Olukemi Akintewe, ԹϱEngineering Professor, Recognized as an AIMBE Emerging Leader
Olukemi Akintewe, an Associate Professor of Instruction in Medical Engineering at USF, has been named an inaugural AIMBE Emerging Leader. Recognized for her advocacy for women and underrepresented groups in STEM, she leads efforts to improve retention and support systems for these students. Dr. Akintewe will be honored at the AIMBE Annual Event in March 2025 in Washington, D.C., where she looks forward to collaborating with other leaders and mentors.
